Screening Matters Issue 13

The new issue (January - February 2013) of the UK NSC's Screening Matters newsletter is now available on the UK Screening Portal, with the latest screening policy information, as well as updates on the English national screening programmes and cross-programme work.

Screening in the UK 2011-12: Policy Review

The UK National Screening Committee's annual report on Screening in the UK 2011-12 has now been published.  As well as introducing the work of the UK NSC and explaining the concept of screening, it covers the UK NSC's policy development work during this period, highlighting the conditions which were reviewed and explaining why screening was or was not recommended.

During 2011-12, the UK NSC made 13 policy recommendations, ranging from alcohol misuse screening in adults to screening for thalassaemia in newborns.

The report also covers the current state of screening in each of the four UK countries, providing a summary of each national screening programmes and key achievements during the year.

Screening in England 2011-12

The UK National Screening Committees's (UKNSC) annual report on Screening in England 2011-12 has now been published on the Screening Portal.  It provides an insight into the NHS screening programmes*, as well as providing an introduction to the role of the UK NSC.  If also discusses the reason why screening is different from other types of services in the NHS.

The report is broken into a number of themes to highlight the successes and challenges of screening using case studies, statistics and commentary:

  • Screening is important
  • Screening is driven by evidence
  • Screening has a unique role in the NHS
  • Screening involves choices
  • Screening has an impact

The Screening at a Glance section also provides, in figues, a two page snapshot of screening during 2011-12.

* Note that this report does not cover the cancer screening programmes, which are managed separately.

New Screening Incidents eLearning Module Launched

new eLearning module on Screening Incidents has been developed by the UK National Screening Committee.  It can be used by everyone involved in the delivery, management, commissioning and quality assurance of the NHS Screening Programmes for antenatal and newborn screening, diabetic eye screening and abdominal aortic aneurysm screening.

The overall aims of the resource are to examine the reasons why screening incidents occur, the steps that can be taken to avoid them, how to manage them, learn from them, and ultimately to make the quality of the patient experience the best it can be.

Registration on the CPD website is quick, simple and free and we hope you find the module both useful and enjoyable.

New NHS Information Service For Parents Launched

Parents can now sign up to the new NHS Information Service for Parents to get regular emails, videos and texts, about pregnancy, the first weeks of their baby's life and beyond. This new, free digital service for parents provides regular, tailored NHS and other quality assured advice for both mothers and fathers.

The emails include information from NHS Choices, the Pregnancy Care Planner and the online Birth to Five guide along with videos showing midwives demonstrating practical advice and parents discussing their own experiences. The service provides information covering a wide range of issues for parents including how a baby develops, finding antenatal preparation, improving their own health, breastfeeding and immunisations.

Pulse Oximetry in NIPE Update

Following the recent publications of new studies concerning the use of pulse oximetry as an aid to screening for congenital heart disease in newborns, the National Screening Committee (NSC) is currently undertaking a review of screening for paediatric congenital heart disease.  That review will inform the relevant NIPE policies and guidelines.
